Get Your Digital Candy by Checking In to Ideas, Books & More

Anyone who knows me or even pays the slightest attention to my streams will know my love for Foursquare and other Geotagging applications. One of my favorite things about such info toys are the virtual reward graphics that get doled out for participating.

They take many forms depending on the marketing of each platform. Be it Badges, Stickers, Pins, Mayorships or Dukeships the companies that really excite me are the ones that offer the awardees real world benefits.

Foursquare was the first to get me hooked with this leveraging of activity participation by putting the reward tools in the hands of business owners and creating Badge Parnterships with large companies.

Taking their lead on the hugely popular Badge/Check game, Get Glue has centralized the rewards system while throwing their sights on Music, Film, Written Word, Locations & Topics.

You earn stickers for checking, reviewing or giving the 'Like' thumbs up to things. These stickers once you've collected more then seven you can trade them in for physical versions mailed free to you.

Rumor has it that they will be partnering with book publishers to allow users to trade them for free books & media items.

Screen shot 2010 09 22 at 17.49.32 Getglue Announces 8 Million Ratings In August And Madmen Stickers!!Good news for you Social entertainment fanatics. One of the sites that we wax lyrical about on this here blog, Get Glue, have just released a growth update and boy is it good news. For those of you that don’t know, GetGlue is a social network for entertainment. GetGlue users check-in to their entertainment, get personalized recommendations and earn exclusive rewards from top entertainment brands.

GetGlue have seen over 8,000,000 unique ratings and check-ins during the month of August and have passed 600,000 users. The social site has seen 20x growth so far in 2010. This is huge news for advocates of social entertainment. It confirms what some of us have been preaching about the potential there for brands that adopt this technology. To show you the hunger out there from brands to get users checking into their movies and shows, here’s a snapshot of the big-wigs that have just signed up with GetGlue.

MSNBC

The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell is a new show that will be offering stickers and rewards for checking in. MSNBC will also be offering rewards for The Rachel Maddow Show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Hardball with Chris Matthews and The Ed Show. For GetGlue fans who watch multiple MSNBC shows, there will also be network fan stickers.

Disney

Most notably, Tron 3D is featured in this batch of badges and rewards which hits the social entertainment demographic nicely, but Disney have also included their new animated movie, Tangled in there.

HGTV

A relative unknown here, checking into House Hunters can earn you stickers. They’ve two tiers of users going from first time buyers (one check in) to Seasoned Hunter (multiple check ins). A very nice idea indeed.

Discovery

GetGlue have announced rewards for Discovery Channel and Animal Planet fans. In addition to the network fan stickers, Discovery is also offering stickers for fans of their hit shows – Myth Busters and Storm Chasers.

AMC

The entire AMC line-up can now get you some rewards for checking in. That includes the ever popular Mad Men, but also Breaking Bad, Rubicon, and very soon to be the new ‘The Walking Dead’ mini-series. Check out some of the Mad Men badges. They’ve a kick ass cocktails badge along with the new Sterling Cooper Draper Price logo.

Childhood ART-ARK-ATYPES

Alot of the work I do is really hard to put into words.

I was listening to a NPR bit with Douglas Coupland, the Gen-X, Shampoo Planet meme spotter and semantic snapshot king while doing working on a combination of research, writing, public relations, web site development and playing with new infotoys.

Coupland talked about how technology is shifting so rapidly that there are new social experiences being fashioned as our culture creates new tools to express & communicate with.

Spent the evening playing with Wolf Archetypes and all that is related to such icons in modern culture. After several hours wandering through the interwebs a dear colleague & creative inspiration slipped me a link to thank me for a day in Billyburgwick.

Strangely enough the whole time I was dipping and bobbing through the digital natives take on the Big Bad Wolf I began to notice something in my day's mental inventory of images and articles only after I watched the video.

Very few rabbits. Very few images of the wolf with his prey. Seems also Little Red & the wolf are not depicted together much either.

Food for thought. Think I'm gonna do a day more of tumblr'n & internet research on rabbits.

Mucho Mahalo dear Plastic Robot & Christopher Stribley. It was nice boppin around East Williamsburg. Again! Again!

Little Bunny Foo Foo is a children’s poem, involving a rabbit harassing a population of field mice. The rabbit is scolded and eventually punished by a fairy. Like many traditional folk songs, there are multiple versions with differing variations. It is also known under the alternative name Little Rabbit Foo Foo; “Foo Foo” is sometimes spelled as “Fu Fu”.

The rhyme is usually sung by an older person to a younger child, using a repetitive tune that reinforces the meter, accompanied by hand gestures. In this mode of transmission, it is a form of tickle play that teaches and reinforces motor skills, often passed as childlore.

One of the more popular versions of the song is as follows:

Running through the forest

Scooping up the fiel
“Little Rabbit Foo Foo

Running through the forest

Scooping up the field mice

And bopping them on the head!

Down came the Good Fairy, and she said:

“Little Rabbit Foo Foo

I don’t wanna see you

Scooping up the field mice

And bopping them on the head!

I will give you three chances,

And if you don’t behave, I will turn you into a  UGLY Goon!

There are alot of pretty faces in the sea of dreamers in NYC but few pair beauty with intelligence so gracefully like this lovely muse. Not only does the camera love her many masks her wit and clear vision makes her one to watch on all levels.

Check out this article my one of my mentors, the Photog Writer, Walt Cessna. He's got great taste in women & can smell a rising star from a mile away.

INTRODUCING ARIEL BRICKMAN

NYC based performance artist Ariel Brickman has only been on the scene for a short time, but already her beyonder visual distraction has caused even the most jaded downtown denizens to take notice.I asked her to describe her work in a few sentances.

"Lately, I've been making and occupying a series of abbreviated, hyper-realized domestic scenes, to accomplish things threefold: provide ground for real encounter and exchange between patrons and the artist, to spark discussion about how human beings establish and occupy personal domestic space, and lastly perform an endurance task that functions as a metaphor for the constant work that is being fully present in the home." - WC

Science Minions Unite: Science made Smexy by Dr. Kiki & Crew

There are few women who honestly make me question my sexuality. My female archetypes are all sideways compared to most people's. My mom wore the pants in the family and was the main bread winner in her career choice of law enforcement.

A woman needs to be strong, independent, funny and drop dead gorgeous in a Jamie Summers/Wonder Woman way to get my attention.

Dr. Kirsten Sanford, PhD is one of the hardest working people in the popularizing science movement and she is real easy on the eyes. Working her way up from the UC College radio to becoming a mainstay on the annoyingly conservative Leo Laporte TWIT radio network.

Her sidekick, everyman Justin Jackson brings off beat humor that boarders on the absurd to the mix. The show is available in a variety of formats from Live Video to the edited down podcast & versions syndicated via TWIT.

If you are looking for a breath of fresh information on science delivered with humor and clarity check out Dr. Kiki ASAP.

I recommend the video option. Dr. Kiki is a babe and Justin well let's just say he has his DILF moments.

Language Found New To Science

National Geographic’s Enduring Voices project expedition to Northern India, has stumbled upon a completely new language to science called Koro. Researchers targeting a language hot spot in Nothern India came across the language while researching two poorly recorded languages of Aka and Miji in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh. They discovered that Koro is spoken by about 800 people and is so unique compared to the local dialects that it is as different as Japanese is to English.

From the Eye to the Brain

Scientists have finally mapped how cells in the eyes communicate with the brain. By comparing a clearly defined visual input to an electrical output of the retina, scientists were able to trace for the first time the neuronal circuitry that connects individual photoreceptors with retinal ganglion cells, the neurons that carry visual signals from the eye to the brain. The discovery may lead to better retinal implants.

Spornographic vs. Sportographic?

What do you think of the European trend of objectification of men? Putting your own hormones aside think it's interesting muscled men seems to have replaced the smokey blonde dames in advertising. Thank you Calvin Klien & Marky Mark, I mean Mister Wahlberg.

But in all its autoerotic, chunky bear-cub pride this ad seems to also lovingly-longingly evoke a missing torso.  The smooth, defined, ab-tastic one belonging to Rooney’s much more talented, much prettier Portugese ‘winker’ chum – famously fined for peeling off his shirt on the pitch – who is no longer with Man U, or Rooney, but playing for Real Madrid and stripping off for Mr Armani. And also for visiting fully-clothed Formula 1 race car drivers.

The message of this latest spornographic ad seems to be that you play better with yourself with your shirt off.  Read more at www.marksimpson.com
