Want to get a peek into what defines East Williamsburg more than anything? I have a sorted history with Arts in Bushwick's Festivals. Their yearly weekend long BOS festivals were a big inspiration for me to start the Billyburgwick site. If you have never been to BOS you've missed out on some of the most innovative artistic projects being produced domestically.
BOS and BETA spaces are community festivals where the residents & artistic spaces open their doors to the public to showcase their art & creative efforts. I had a bone to pick with them because their BOS weekend lumps in East Williamsburg into it's leveraging of Bushwick as a brand. This I would argue has contributed to the confusion around where East Williamsburg ends and Bushwick begins. It's Flushing Avenue. North is Billyburkwick, South is Bushwick. Look it up.
When I was approached by one of Billyburgwick.org's contributors about helping with a group show she was currating on the front line of the neighborhood name debate I jumped at the chance. This site is founded on the idea that New Media is a powerful, free technology that can be used to amplify the efforts of already existing communities while fostering new ones.
'American Garbage' opens on Sunday, November 14th at The Loom on Flushing Avenue along with 'Unkind', curated by Rachel Phillips. The Loom is a great of example of the practical & exciting ways old spaces are being refitted & re-purposed to serve current needs.
If you are looking for something to do with a Sunday, check out some great group shows & earn some Foursquare Badges save the date. November 14th.
Take the L train to Morgan or Montrose Avenue and plan to spend and hour or two. Lots of brunch options along the way. Most of BETA Spaces group venues are marked as 'Gallery' so if you have not earned your Warhol Badge yet, here's an easy afternoon adventure for ya.
