Sunday Trash Trip: Group Shows & being a good BETA

Group shows usually make me want to run screaming in the opposite direction. These showings come across as case studies in how the cult of the individual & self branding movements converge out of economic necessity or public relations strategy. Often a hodgepodge of artists working in varied mediums group, shows read as a collection of mini galleries where each artist gets their moment in the viewer's visual stage. Part of the issue I feel is the space in which group shows usually are held: Sales Galleries intended to showcase a single artist.

Opening parties at these shows illustrate important context of placement & the power of setting has upon one's experience. Over crowding and pack behavior seem to be the standard fare when several artist's social network are all holding space to show support at openings.

BETA Spaces avoiding the expectations of traditional space is holding it's annual collection of group shows on Sunday, November 14th. Last year I wandered several blocks from show to show and began to open my mind to enjoying art in a group showing setting. With over 50 curated showings all within walking distance of the Morgan Stop on the L it makes a great post brunch adventure.

The Loom, the newest of the factory turned multi use space on the Flushing avenue East Williamsburg/ Bushwick line will be playing host to two separate group shows.

Make a day of it! Here's what I would do if I wasn't helping out with American Trash:

Take the L Train to Morgan Avenue. Get brunch at Roberta's or Jens-n-Outlaw's Fish Fry Truck wander south aiming for The Loom. Pick up a map and start exploring.

Event Hoping & Being A Genuine Bunny

These days with the blossoming of social media & the integration of web calendars most people are bombarded by invites daily. I spend about 15-30 minutes a day juggling, removing & picking through the onslaught of well intended invites.

The ethics of sending them out is a whole can of worms for another day & a battle I don't have the strength to wage here. What I'm interested in is what one is to do with figuring out which ones to go to. Having a healthy social life is important but balancing the options can be exhausting and showing up to a friend's event tired & grumpy is no fun for anyone.

Think ahead:

To keep on top of things I use a small arsenal of fee cloud based solutions that center around Facebook Events & Tungle.me. Not going to get into a debate about the merits of using Facebook as the main hub for the events as I do. Yes there are the privacy concerns but most of my network uses FB Events & it connects with several calendar systems.

Communicate Honestly:

You don't want to be the person who says yes to everything but follows through on attending none. This is not only disingenuous it's unfair to those organizing. Digital & Verbal RSVP's are intended to give a heads up for planning purposes. If you want to support the event but cannot attend share the information or at least check the 'Not Sure' or 'Maybe' option.

Chose wisely:

With all the event invites coming at you one should weigh the options honestly & carefully. What's your motivation to go? Will it be fun? Is it a social obligation? Can you afford the time & energy required to be a good guest? Each of these questions are highly personal and have always helped me keep my calendar balanced juggling social & personal obligations.

Tonight is one such night.

One of my favorite artists Tara McPerson is having a solo show tonight in NYC. I've admired her since my dear cool hunting college pal Catherine Dalton turned me onto her last year. I had wanted to show my support by showing up at the opening but last night was Scooter Laforge's Wasteline at Nasty Pig and all the fun (late night) I had blog casting the event live it's not gonna happen.

Unable to show my support with my feet I'm doing this blog so people can check out the art of a lady who knows her way around the illustration canvas.

Tara McPherson
Opening reception:
Saturday, October 23, 7 to 9 pm
Tara McPherson is an artist based out of New York City. Creating art about people and their odd ways, her characters seem to exude an idealized innocence with a glimpse of hard earned wisdom in their eyes. Recalling many issues from childhood and good old life experience, she creates images that are thought provoking a...nd seductive. People and their relationships are a central theme throughout her work.

Tara exhibits her paintings and serigraphs in fine art galleries all over the world. Named the crown princess of poster art by ELLE Magazine, she has created numerous gig posters for rock bands such as Beck, Modest Mouse, and Melvins. Her array of art also includes creating toys with companies like Kidrobot, Dark Horse, and Toy2R, painted comics and covers for DC Vertigo, advertising and editorial illustrations for companies such as Wyden+Kennedy and Spin Magazine, and teaching a class at Parsons in NYC.

Content Curation: Buzz Word with a

Everywhere you read online these days the catch phrase & debate in the marketing circles is content curation. What it is, if it's ethical, the best practices and other such over intellectualized matters. The writers and articles I've enjoyed are the ones that step out those issues and focus on the doing side of it.

Content curation is the taking of one style or source of digital information (mostly website articles) and repositioning the content on another site.

Some sites simply lift content from one site and post the best parts to their web page in hopes of increasing ad revenue. Most red-blooded males have frequented such sites which to their delight offer a treasure trove of password free pretties & download options.

Many of the most popular online destinations (Mashable, Gawker, MSN & Facebook) rely heavily on the concept to draw users back to their content streams.

In all this people have deconstructed every logistical & theoretical consideration but have not even mentioned that the practice is not a new one. The Sear's catalog use by the rural American merchants is one of the clearest examples in recent history of the act of content curation. Content curation began when we first came down from the trees and gathered things under our hairy arms for survival.

For a great example of content curation in the retail world check out Mxyplyzyk. It's one of my favorite stores in NYC for little gifts and personal indulgences for myself. Most my holiday gifts to my relatives and mirth minded loved ones usually comes from the shelves of this little store on the border of the West Village & Chelsea. Anyone who has visited my rest room will recognize the store's wares.

Mxyplyzyk - a Superman name that's Super Bad

112mxyplyzyk_3
Submitted by our Sous Chef, Caroline “Ruby Sneakers” Leavitt, our most outrageous inductee into the Name Shame Hall of Fame ever is a quirky Greenwich Village gift boutique named Mxyplyzyk. The store claims "the name is inspired by a character in early Superman comics." Ironically, they didn't use the actual character's name,  (Mr.) Mxyzptlk, (pictured below) which is spelled differently than "Mxyplyzyk," (perhaps thinking they might head off a C&D letter from D.C. Comics), because you cannot, after all,  confuse Mxyplyzyk with Myxzptlk

Mxyplyzyk hits all the criteria to qualify for the Name Shame Hall of Fame and is a leading contender for the annual Head Scratcher™ trophy, awarded each December by Eat My Words. Here's why:

  1. It’s difficult to pronounce the first time you see it (actually every time you see it)

  2. It’s meaningless unless someone explains it to you (even then)

  3. It's forced and unnatural sounding (oh boy)

  4. It has an unnatural spelling (ya think? )

  5. It’s just damn annoying (did we say oh boy yet?)

Inc. magazine briefly discussed Mxyplyzyk in an article entitled "What's in a Name"?

Here is an except from the full article:

Kevin Brynan spends a large chunk of his day explaining over and over
again how to pronounce the word Mxyplyzyk--the name of his gift shop in
New York City's Greenwich Village. As it happens, the name (which is
pronounced "mix-ee-pliz-ik," in case you were stumped)
is so long that
Brynan's business card is a three-part foldout. The unusual moniker,
created by a co-founder and inspired by a Superman comic book
character, is fitting for a shop with unusual items like pug dog
"puggy" banks and warped vinyl record serving bowls. On the other hand,
it's hard to tell your friends about a store when you can't pronounce
the name, and good luck finding it online.
Ultimately, Brynan thinks
the unusual name has been a plus, highlighting the store's quirkiness
and helping to draw foot traffic. Nonetheless, he adds, "sometimes I
wish we'd named it John Doe."

162137mrmxyzptlk_400

So, welcome to The Hall Mxyplyzyk.  It's a rare name that is so very wrong on every level and makes us scratch our heads super hard.  However, we can give credit where credit is due.  We are quite sure that every extension of the domain name was available on GoDaddy for $9.95, which is a deciding factor for many companies when choosing a name. More on that later...

Digital Trading & Virtual Sandboxing: NYC Hotbead of Social Media Content

Like it or not we are firmly into what's being termed the digital revolution. Modernity is over. Didn't you get the memo? They faxed out the news years ago. Post-Modernism got demoted to a school of thought. Welcome to the Information Age. The tools for data manipulation are cheap and accessible to most adults. Including the artists.

The room spanning computers in War Games & Blue Blue's progenitors now fit in your backpack. The military's advancements in solid state electornics & tele communication have led to cheap mass storage and have removing the traditional location barriers.

The ironic thing to note though despite the means of production becoming cloud based & digital, New York City as a creative hub and non-commercial art magazines have never seen such popularity.

New York is at the center of the physical printing & editing and talent network.

One one level it's all very incestuous: you'll see an individual New Yorker (past or present) modeling, being on both sides of the camera or keyboard contributing to or having their work on several sites. The talent is versatile, wired and apart of an emerging supportive network of like minded artists. Focusing on the power of art, community & multimedia models New York produces a large volume of the original content on several social networks.

Try State Magazine & Spank are two leading the pack in this counter intuitive art trend. Leveraging free online blog & cloud based platforms each use the internet not just for promotion but for crowd sourced editing & co creative critique. Not to confuse things and suggest they are the originators of this technique. All one has to do is look at the artists they mine for their digital & physical editions to see they are following their lead.

Check out the online expression of how New York artists have been applying the model of multimedia & crowd sourcing in innovative vein since many networks went live.

Matt Fagan Art Opening Kicks off Devil's Night Tradition

East Williamsburg's most charming quality to me is the unique hybrids you see in the small businesses. A block from me there are Barber Shops that are also Bike & Auto Repair Shops, Bodegas that offer lawyer services and even a children's clothing store which sells amazing Guatemalan food.

Olive Valley, the late night Mediterranean late night spot on Bogart Street will be holding a reception for the art work currently on display by Matt Fagan on Saturday, October 30th. The Palestinian owned Falafel restaurant will be partnering with their neighbors to decorate Bogart's trees with holiday lights & Tiki torches that night.

The Big Tree Bottles will be doing wine tastings and Eastern District will be providing power and sidewalk space for the live Dub Sets slated to be performed by Desmond Williams.

Avoid the chaos in the city come hang out with your neighbors on Devil's Night.

Why I'm the worst marketer you'll "Like"

My personal passion & idealism are two of my strongest tools in my bag of tricks that I bring to New Media & digital media. They also are the two things that cause the most conflict in my dealings with other online marketers, net personalities & chat room moderators.

Playing devils advocate on line since my Q-Link/ Commodore days has really taught me alot but has also led to me making people feeling less than through my O.D.D. (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) counter points. I'm not one to cosign someone's misconceptions & over personalizations in the real or digital world. While I've gotten better at avoiding charged language & keeping my comments to the ideas & concepts being discussed I still get blocked, banned and misunderstood. Often.

It's an issue that has come up in many areas of my life, so recently on a call to my father I asked him if he had any insight into the matter. He laughed and recounted some stories about he'd seen me hit the same wall over and over again as a kid. Gently reminding me that I was never a kid who would be quiet when I had something to say and lucky for me I learned how to choose my battles better as I got older.

Just this morning one of my favorite online Marketers solicited through one of her personal Facebook account streams a request for her network to Add a client of her's:

"Here is an account I'm working on for SMO. Please become my friend & show us some like love!!! (Also, see my work... ) Shhhh!!!"

Dot Jenna is an amazing teacher. Many of my clients, both paid and ones in my barter network, know how much I adore her online webinars & light hearted shares. Most of what I know & use about Twitter personally and professionally I learned from watching her free webinars and by following her suggestions via her tech posts.

After I inquired about her request she informed me that she was setting up a personal account for a client:

"It is someone else's account that I am working. Look at it now. She doesn't have time to work it, so I'm going in and adding content and friends 2 x per day... 5 days a week. It's tougher than you think to get the fire started... but it will happen. I need help in the beginning though. Please like me!!! Then watch [her] popularity [as it] grows into FAME... woooo hoooo"

Well at this point it became obvious to me that the classic conflict of traditional marketing techniques and those emerging with new media had reared it's head again.

My based stance is this: More is NOT better on Facebook.

I think I went wrong with the word 'abuse'.

I just wish I didn't piss off one of my favorite Digital Diva's in this discussion.

Amplify’d from www.facebook.com
I'm shocked you would abuse social networks so openly. What's the use of having a network of people who don't know you? I've set up accounts for Glitteratti but used their emails & personal info to set up actual connections. Let me ask you this, did you get your start with Twitter before starting to leverage Facebook? It's about quality of network & depth of connections not volume that really works.
DotJenna That's your opinion. I am helping this woman figure out what to do. Once we build her network, she can take over. We've done this for several. It's a beautiful thing. She learns from our example.
I suppose choosing Quality over Quantity is an opinion but one that seems to be the trend in Social Media engagement. Hiring someone to help is becoming a standard but 99% of New Media is about making CONNECTIONS not just having them.

Apply...ing the same traditional marketing techniques to all your networks may not be the best long term strategy. The power of Facebook lies in it's ability to "connect and share with the people in your life" not random people your consultant found for you.

Trusted Networks are the spine of any marketer's toolbox. With this whole thread I now have to question all requests & shares from you in a new light. Social Capital/ Whuffie is a fickle thing one should always consider how they are using it.

BTW have you checked out Amplify yet? OMG it's an awesome tool! I'll send you a link if you have yet to see it's magic.

DotJenna She comes on and posts about her real life. It's no different than having an assistant helping to post fun and interesting content on your blog. It's her because she's committing to pay me to do the work. She cares because she's putting her money into making her Facebook page excellent.
I was trying to bring the conversation to the general topic and avoiding the personal level. If you had asked us to join her Fan Page I wouldn't of said anything. Posting content for someone who is too busy is not the same as creating a Fal...se network of strangers. More is not better in the new world of social media.

Any who this thread aside, do you Amplify yet?

You are doing a great job Jenna I was just thinking of the big picture. Please don't take me questioning something as me calling into doubt you or YOUR network.

It's just the techniques that work to build trusted Twitter Networks are not th...e same here on Facebook.

Twitter is about data & number of connections, Facebook is about content & type of connections.

Burlesque Book Club's Handmaid's Tale: Red Read, Right.

I had avoided this book since it's release.. It was on the best seller's wall at the first bookstore I worked at forever.. I was too busy playing mall rat & looking at Maplethorpe photo books to pay it any head.

After years of avoiding it someone very talented digitally whispered that his avant garde book club had chosen it as the text for their next performance.

Dark Scifi is a risky venture for me. Many great authors have made their fame with novels which capture Distopian projections of their day. Camus, Asimov, Borroughs, Orwell, Bradbury, Lem all gave voice to a collective negative extrapolation of their societies. These books always are hard for me to read, but stay with me like no other style of writing.

I've been hearing little bits and pieces from several of the artists involved on what they are preparing to share on the next gathering on Tuesday, October 26th. Charlotte G has broken out her large brushes and has embarked on creating an amazing large scale painting to be used as the evening's backdrop. Last report she was wrestling studio spaces trying to manage the work's girth.

I'm hoping that maybe someone in the group suggests something from Cory Doctorow stock of sci-fi & speculative fiction in the near future. Once you go Doctorow... Oh I don't know.. Most of his books are young adult explorations of Distopic Fears but always infused with hope and illustrations of the under dog getting his due by story's end. In my old age I guess I look for positive Sci-Fi books when I want to explore such topics.

So Good Book, Solid Genre, Amazing Talent & Great Venue. You should go or at least spread the word via your Social Networks if you can not make it.

Plastic Robot, Live Fast & Christopher Stribley: Unlawful yet Correct

Having been to my fair share of historical sites & guided tours I really hate when someone bores me to death with their attempts to enhance one's experience with useless facts & neat little factoids.

Christopher Stribley/ Plastic Robot will be opening a solo show at Live Fast Friday, November 12th at 6 PM entitled 'Unlawful Posting of Signs/Ads'.

Always one to get me to see things from a new angle I hope you'll check out his work in person or via his public Fan Page. Plastic Robot is a thought provoking artist who saw and has utilized new media as a digital palate & play ground early in the game.

I didn't really understand how much power there is in social media until recently going out to Quel Beast's show with Christopher. I knew he was kinda a big deal online, but watching kids & artists treat him with the respect and star struck adoration normally saved for old school Giltteratti blew my mind.

Watching an artist at his own opening drop everything to cross the room and declaring: "You're Christopher Stribley" totally convinced that Facebook might not be so evil.

Hope to see you in the East Village for the opening. I hear there will be bunnies. flaming bunnies.

"Christopher does photos of street art. He does it to the point that the street becomes HIS art, he has what one calls "an eye". He creates from what he sees and often what we don't see but should, poetry and magic when we'd sadly just hurry by it. He makes street art into (capital "S", capital "A") Street Art which turns immediately into just good ol' Art! The good stuff, the kind we want for a long time and not jus...t like flairs, for a short while. You'll want to live with his stuff for eons, for decades, forever.

He has captured the essence of New York street art and made it into true fine art. Its like what Andy did for advertising art. He made it into real art that lasts. So, this is what Christopher is doing with ephemeral street art. He makes it solidify into something which lasts and which you can contemplate and linger on. Forever. Just look at the totally Mdvaniiism-esque pieces above. He has made us look at them in a way we would wish to look at them ideally. He's madly clever. He's very Mr. Knightley, indeed!"
